A new place to go.

Helen Index : 3-4

It's funny that small things can change how you look at life, yesterday I was reading the forward from "Tails from Earthsea". In it the aurthur was talking of how she would go to Earthsea and see what was going on there, to her the place was real in her imagination. That got me thinking if I could build an imaginary world that would be the inspiration for my Art. But what sort of world would it be, one full of mirrors reflecting other worlds? It would have to have people (but not as we know them, perhaps here is a place for my cats) and animals grate and small, it would have to be a place of wonder. why limit it to just a world, how about a whole universe, a place to travel and explore and if I can document.
Could I really come up with something original? I can only try...

Define 'Original'. Its a very haughty thing to say but keep with me. The whole idea of some form of gateway between worlds has been kicking around since ohh... the 1920's. Of course if you were to use that concept today people would compare you to a certain Sci-Fi show and it's ring shaped device and not a short that appeared in Fantastic Stories. So 'original' can be simply who has the biggest mind share.

I don't know much about how your creative processes work, but it might be best to start small. Build a single character. What events shapped that person? And keep extrapolating from there and you'll eventually come up with a living breathing world; it doesn't have to be a major character in your tale, just random spud.

Building a universe from the getgo can be exceptionally hard because you're juggling so many variables at once and trying to come up with something that 'works', so starting small can give you a kick start in to building big.

Obviously it all depends on how you work, but if your normal modus operandi isn't producing try something else :)
